Live365: 10 Years After First Research by Paragon (Part 2)

02:19:42 pm | Miscellaneous | Mike Henry

live365-logo.jpgMy last blog introduced the first research conducted for Live365 by Paragon (for a Gavin Convention) in 2001.  Focus Groups among teenagers were held shortly after Live365 launched, and the results provide a fascinating flashback of digital media circa 2001.

In part 1 of this blog, I covered:

  • Music Listening Online
  • Music Discovery
  • Online Radio Listening
  • Mobile Radio Listening
  • Size of Music Collections

In part 2, I can share five more topics covered almost 10 years ago.  Once again, I update the topics with a 2010 point of view. (Read More)

Live365: 10 Years After First Research by Paragon (Part 1)

11:18:14 am | Media Research, Miscellaneous | Mike Henry

live365-logo.jpgI was shocked last week when I read that groundbreaking internet music service Live365 had turned 10 years old.  Could it really be that long since Paragon conducted the first research for Live365?  I asked Paragon’s Larry Johnson, who I recall conducted the research, and lo and behold he sent me a Focus Group report from January of 2001.  The research of 15-20 year old early adopters was done in conjunction with the Gavin Report while Reed Bunzel was in charge there.  Live365 along with Gavin commissioned the research to provide a peek into one of the first legitimate online music services.  As I now remember, I presented this research at a Gavin Convention in Miami. Trying to Make Wine from the New Media Ferment (Part 3 of 3)

09:13:44 am | Radio Ratings, Media Research, Miscellaneous | Larry Johnson

wine barrelIn the last couple blogs I’ve been discussing an American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPwine barrelOR) report which concludes that Internet surveys may not yield valid, reliable results.  While online sampling may be fine for projects like a Public station surveying their contributors, trying to project online sampling to a general population appears troubling.  There’s no doubt that we are in a state of ferment when it comes to providing clients with cost efficient, reliable research.  Here are some recent observations that may shed some light on defensible, cost-efficient research procedures.

The Challenge to Research Sampling in a New Media Age—How Random R U? (Part 2 of 3)

11:32:37 am | Radio Ratings, Media Research, Miscellaneous | Larry Johnson

Last week, I cited a March 2010 American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) report, concluding that Internet surveys may not yield valid, reliable results.  Let’s take a look at the challenges to achieving a cost-efficient, random (probability) sample…even before the advent of the New Media Age.

New Radio Model at the BIA/Kelsey Digital Strategies Conference

09:25:31 am | The New Radio Model, Reinventing Radio | Mike Henry

nobrainer.jpegOne year ago, Paragon posted a white paper called the “New Radio Model,” which is founded on hyper-local content and multiplatform distribution.  At the time, it seemed overdue and in fact a no brainer that this was the route that broadcast radio must take to compete moving forward.  Then we embarked on a six-month New Radio Model blog series in partnership with the financial experts at BIA/Kelsey.  Last month, I moderated a panel at the National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas called “The New Radio Model:  Tool Kit & Case Studies.”  This week, the New Radio Model took center stage at the Digital Strategies Conference hosted by BIA/Kelsey.
